SWAINBY PEG GUIDE AND INFO
The match record for the venue is 56lb
of Chub in a 5hr match . The venue usually produces a few weights over 20lb
though a double figure weight would normally have a chance of winning. Weights and areas
can vary wildly according to the time of year , water levels and conditions. For
this reason the winning peg can never be certainly predicted but it will nearly
always be chub. Occasional specimens over 6lb produced but average 3-4lb.
The best rated pegs
/areas are however as follows : Pegs 43-46 (Early season only ) , Pegs 71-75 (all
year), Pegs 23-26 (all year), Pegs 58-67 (all year) , Pegs 18-19 (all
year), Pegs 3-4 (all year), Pegs 30-31 (all year), Pegs 39-42 (Autumn
and Winter). High water normally reasonable areas include pegs 2-4, 7, 9,
11, 13-15, 18, 23-25, 30-31, 39, 48-50 , 59-65 and peg 71 but beware high water matches
can be won from anywhere on the length except fast water areas and
sometimes with a single chub.
The best Barbel pegs are 4-5 , 26-27 , 41-43, 63-67 and 74-75. You will have
a much better chance of catching them if you fish late evening during
summer/autumn. Most are in the 7-10lb region. Pike can be caught almost anywhere
on the length and some are over 20lb so use heavy gear . Some noted pike pegs
include 14-15 , 56 - 57 and 62.
The
most productive time of year is usually Aug to Oct but some big weights also
between Jan-Mar if conditions are right. June /July weights usually from fast
water areas .
Baits- wasp grub and bread tended to be best last year but worm , meat , maggots
and casters also produce good weights.
In recent years most of the restocking in conjunction with The River Swale
Preservation Society has been mainly very small Barbel.
